SWD Tech News Archive

This is the place to find older updates from the SWD Tech site. This section will grow to incorporate all of our older releases with time (and effort)

23Nov04

Linux: New version of Debian GNU / Linux (version 3.0 release 3) and Fedora Core (FC3 for i386 32 bit), as well as the latest Knoppix LiveCD, SuSe LiveCD, Mandrake 9.5 PowerPack and 10 Standard. The website will be updated in due course.

Antivirus: A major fault has been corrected in the NOD32 Antivirus order system. Our appologies for this oversight.

OpenOffice.org: We are happy to announce the availability of our OpenOffice.org v1.1.3 CD. Furthermore, all OOo CD's will henceforth contain both Linux and Microsoft Windows binaries.

Website: At the time of writing our database is down. This will affect all dynamic content across the site, with the exception of the online store. We are presently investigating the issue.

Antivirus: Our NOD32 Antivirus pages and other updates will be finalised during the course of Monday and Tuesday this week. We know the links are not live at this stage - blame the Olympics and lack of sleep! :-)

General: Plenty has changed since this page was last updated. To start with, SWD Tech has a new home and a new physical address on the way. We've taken new offices in Swellendam and are in the process of renovating and remodelling. We look forward to revealing more very soon.

Linux: SWD Tech will soon be offering Mandrake Linux and (hopefully) GNU Cash for distribution within Africa. Further details later this month!

Hardware: SWD Tech is now an Intel Channel Partner. (more details).

Antivirus: SWD Tech has become a NOD32 Authorised Partner and we're proud to offer our clients what is possibly the world's best antiviral product suite. Eset Software, the creators of NOD32, are a Czech-based corporation with offices in the US & Britian and partners across the globe. Their corporate clients include software giant Microsoft, and others such as Dell and Canon, inclusive of others. With a lighter footprint than other major products such as Symantec's Norton Antivirus, far greater scanning speed and a unbroken record of 29 (and still growing - that's every test since 1996) 100% passes against Virus Bulletin's "In the Wild" list. No other antiviral product comes anywhere near this record!

You can purchase one or two year licenses for up to 4 stand-alone or 5 or ten workstation corporate licenses from our online store at extremely competitive prices. Please contact us directly with all other licensing enquiries you might have.

If you'd like to try a 30 day demonstration of NOD32 Antivirus for Windows, please click here to order your distribution CD and subscription username & password (priced at R25 plus shipping).

As a result of our partnership with Eset, we have removed the majority of Symantec's dedicated virus removal tools from our site and replaced them with the applicable NOD32 replacements. We will continue to offer all products and services from Symantec including Norton Antivirus and Symantec Antivirus Corporate Edition, as well as competing products from NAI Inc. (now McAfee Inc - see below).

15Jul04
General: Word has come via our upstream suppliers and technology partners that Network Associates International Inc. will be changing its name to McAfee Inc. See here for text of the full client release.
11Jul04
Linux: The maintainer of the Fedora Core pages FUBAR'd - he forgot to check the page after making updates with the result that the updates never took and the page has been out of date for almost a month. This was corrected during the course of the weekend. Our appologies.
13Jun04

Linux: Finally we're ready to release Fedora Core 2. A combination of bad downloads and slow connectivity (analog leased line can be slow) made this take far longer than expected. Anyway, you can get Fedora Core 2 here!

OpenOffice.org: You can now order OpenOffice.org from SWD Tech. Click here for the details...

And finally, as a result of the requirements of our credit card processing system, only registered forms of delivery, being those that provide a tracking system, will be used for dispatch of credit card orders. At the moment that means only registered mail and Speed Services Couriers. We'll be providing a number of alternate options as and when they present themselves.

22May04
Linux: We're in the process of downloading the Fedora Core 2 ISO's. We expect that the disk set will be ready and tested by 3 June 2004 (two weeks). If you'd like to be emailed when they're released, send us an email and as to be added to the notification list. On account of there being 8 disks in the full set (4 in either binaries or SRPM sets) our pricing will be adjusted slightly.
30Mar04

General: Our credit card facilities have been finalised and are now open for order processing!
SA Gateway ISP services can now be paid for via credit card debit order as well as via standard debit order.
Note that in terms of South African law the Reserve Bank requires that all credit card processing within the country be performed in Rands. This means that should we provide prices in foriegn amounts in future that these amounts will be approximations dependent on variable exchange rates.

I will be updating each of the product pages in due course with credit card order buttons. This should be complete by the end of the week.

22Mar04
Linux: We have decided to decrease the cost of our Linux disk sets in order to make it easier for all to experience freedom of choice! Debian disk sets will now cost R100, Fedora Core will cost R75 for either binary or SRPM sets or R130 both sets. Gentoo disk set prices are presently under discussion and should be finalised before April 1st. These decreases will only come into effect on April 1st 2004.
07Mar04
General: The specific virus tools page is now up (page now removed), in a prepatatory phase. The idea of this part of our site is to provide links to the tools that we at SWD Tech use out in the field to diagnose and resolve particular virus threats. It's nowhere near finished yet. The same can be said of the tips and tricks pages. We're (slowly) getting there...
26Feb04

Linux Distribution: Red Hat has finally given us the go-ahead to offer Fedora Core via our distribution network. We can now accept your Fedora Core orders. In related news, Fedora Core 2 is in testing. The package now contains 8 CD's in total, 4x binary and 4x source code RPMs.

General: The site hasn't been updated in a number of days. We're presently working at integrating a pricing system such that you can browse our hardware and software product catalog. Look for the catalog going live soon.

22Jan04
Fun Stuff: The chat system is active (page now removed) ! Currently there are a large number of missing graphics, but that will be corrected during th course of the day. The forum will follow along when it's good and ready for public consumption.
21Jan04

Internet Access: SA Gateway service pages updated. An application form for dialup and ISDN has been added, as well as a support request email form.

Fun Stuff: The chat system and forum are coming along nicely. Presently investigating a possible webmail portal. Keep an eye on this page!

20Jan04

General: It's been a few days since the last update. The contact page is now fully operational, and a move has been made on creating the online shopping mall.

Linux Distribution: We're still waiting for official word from Red Hat as to whether we may legally distribute Fedora, with no known date at this time. Gentoo Linux is now also available in generic i686 format!

10Jan04
General: The new changes are coming along just great! The site is being updated every hour or so on average with new content as it old site is assimilated and the text moved over. Graphics will take a little more time. Still, things look much better already.
09Jan04
General: New site design has been uploaded. It's taken an absolute age to come up with something half good, and I'm still not happy with the result. We'll be switching to PHP in the none-too-distant future, so watch this space!
05Jan04

Linux Distribution: Unfortunately we no longer enjoy the preferential treatment we once received from our couriers. This means that we can no longer offer you next day delivery to your door at an acceptable price.

This service has been replaced with a counter-to-door service offered by Speed Service Couriers, at the same price of R50.00 Note that this is still below our cost - SSC charge ~R53 per disk set by weight. SSC indicate that this service takes between 48 and 60 hours (2-2.5 days) for delivery to take place. SSC offer parcel tracking as an added benefit.

18Dec03
Debian Distribution: Debian 3.0r2 was released 27Nov03 and our master images have been updated!
